In general I absolutely agree with the above article. The key comment I would make is that organizations are managed by people, and that those people usually respond to the targets you give them (and any attached bonuses). So it can happen that even if a segment along a particular dimension is known to be highly attractive, this knowledge will only get actioned if such action is in line with somebody's targets.

In other words: you may need to adapt the performance management approach and sometimes the organization in order to benefit from the insights the ERP system & data analysis tools give you.

What about the importance of the quality of communication/leadership in a multi-dimensional/cultural organization?

Projects may run across different business units however, in the end doesn't there need to be accountability?

Isn't it human nature to ask what have I achieved?

Most large/small companies incentive programs are based on rewarding very specific objectives/behavior. These traditional incentive programs don't consistently reward individuals who care to make greater contributions (regardless of level) to the organization, nor are they set up to recognize them to further instill this culture throughout the organization.

Dear Betty, If tweeting about different subjects is what you like to do, there is nothing "wrong" with that. The benefit of having a bit more focus in what you tweet about, is that it is easier for people to decide if they actively want to follow/interact with you.

Hans,

Nice post and good overview of what to consider when jumping into the Twitter world. Everyone is still trying to get their arms around this new tool. While I would argue it is an extremely powerful tool and has the potential to change the way we think about communicating with our customers, prospects, partners, colleagues, etc. - we must remember that it is just a tool and not a "silver bullet". The marketing fundamentals don't change.

Having said that, don't get me wrong. I think that social networks will have a significant impact on how we market products and services.

I also posted a couple of articles recently on the topic that may be of interest:

Keep blogging!
